Bodmin, standing proud on the moor's western edge, is the perfect place to relax after an expedition into the moors. The town's turbulent history is on display in the Town Museum, the Duke of Cornwall Light Infantry Regimental Museum, and in the Shire Hall, with its Courtroom Experience. You can relive the past in the grand houses of Pencarrow and Lanhydrock, and see rebellion and retribution re-enacted in Bodmin's summer Riding & Heritage Day, with its processions, mock battles and medieval pageants. In 2001 this is preceded by the drama of the Cornwall Theatre Festival. Launceston watches over the moor's eastern flank, its Norman castle standing proud above the town. Georgian houses, the intricately carved church, the narrow streets and market square are just some of the architectural delights. A fine museum showcases the town's history, from the Bronze Age to World War II. And for a real blast of nostalgia, what better than a journey back to the Age of Steam? Both Launceston and Bodmin have steam railways, running through beautiful countryside. Just the ticket!
